Three words that strike fear into the heart of small businesses everywhere. Today we are going to pull back the curtain on SEO and present a mini education on the concepts and application. Let’s do this!
What is SEO?
According to Moz, “search engine optimization is the practice of increasing the quantity and quality of traffic to your website through organic search engine results.”
Why do I need it?
There are so many reasons why you need SEO but let’s cover two. One is that when your website is properly SEO’d, you are accurately telling the world who you are and what you do. This means that you are then funneling the right information to the right person at the right time. A second important reason that you need SEO is because when done properly, it drives the traffic that you are looking for directly to your site! So, SEO doesn’t just tell your story properly, but it also delivers customers directly to your doorstep.
How do I do it?
SEO is not for the faint of heart. If you are looking to SEO your business website, then get ready to take on a whole lot of tasks. These will include market and keyword research, writing and posting original content, optimizing all aspects of your website, link building and more. The best place to start if you just want to dip your toe in the water? Start blogging. Original, fresh content will always be the most powerful way to SEO your website. Establish yourself as THE expert in your field and share what you know, learn and see. If you can maintain doing that consistently for 90 days, then you might be ready to do all of this on your own.
Small Business Tools
Luckily there are countless resources that can help you with your SEO. Here are my three favorite:
- Moz
- Google (keyword tool, search console. etc)
- Screaming Frog
I truly believe in de-mystifying the impossible and with some coffee and time, you can start to get a grasp on this SEO stuff. Additionally, it will teach you a lot about your website, your brand and your marketing strategy. It is important to remember that SEO is only one small part of the success recipe. But if you have a clear and concrete idea of who you are and what you want, then that should take shape for the entire business. Great SEO means a greater website which can mean a greater business!
