Celebrating National Farmers’ Market Week August 2022

Celebrating National Farmers’ Market Week

August 7 – 13, 2022

This week, as we celebrate National Farmers’ Market Week, let us support some of the Farmers’ Markets in the San Fernando Valley.  At farmers’ markets, the community is given the opportunity to purchase a wide variety of fresh, local foods from local farms and farmers.  And that’s not all, local artisans are able to sell their products from freshly baked breads to homemade jams, and other delicious, seasonal treats.

Apart from the availability of fresh produce, farmers’ markets are a great way to bring the community together and support the local economy.  Here are some famers’ markets to support around the San Fernando Valley.  Bring your family and friends and make it a fun day out!

Burbank Farmers Market, one of the oldest Farmers Markets in Southern California, started in 1983.  Most of the produce come from family-owned farms, some have been in business for over 100 years.  Located at the intersection of Olive Ave. and Glenoaks Blvd. in Downtown Burbank, they are open on SATURDAYS only from 8:00AM to 12:00PM, rain or shine.  As a not-for-profit market, all proceeds go to the Providence Saint Joseph Foundation.  Funds are used to help provide medical care to those who are unable to afford it.  For more information, visit their website.

Recognized by LA Magazine as the “Best Farmers Market in the San Fernando Valley”, the ONEgeneration Encino Farmers Market brings together over 30 farms from Central and Southern California.  Located at 17400 Victory Blvd in Encino and open year round on SUNDAYS from 8:00am – 1:00pm, the market draws a crowd of over 1,500 attendees weekly, offering not just fresh produce, eggs, flowers, and poultry, but prepared food such as crepes, vegan products, coffee, tea, smoothies, two bakeries, and gourmet tamales.  They have vendors selling handmade soaps, candles, hats, clothing, jewelry, and more.  Live entertainment, face painting, and a bounce house is available on select Sundays.  A portion of the weekly proceeds help support ONEgeneration the services they provide to the community they serve.  More information can be found on their website.

The Northridge Farmers Market and Family Festival is a seasonal farmers’ market located at the Northridge Fashion Mall parking lot, facing Tampa Ave., started on March 16, 2022 and ends on November 2, 2022.  It is open on WEDNESDAYS from 5:00pm – 9:00pm.  Organized and operated by the Coastal Pacific Farmers Markets, their mission is to “provide an opportunity for local farmers, food producers, and artists to sell their products to ensure access to health and nutritious food while building and strengthening community relationships.”  Live musical performances from local bands as well as a fun zone with a bouncy house and slide, and games provide entertainment for the entire family.  Visit their website for more information.

The Studio City Farmers Market is a non-profit farmers market owned jointly by the Studio City Chamber of Commerce foundation and the Studio City Residents Association.  Located on Ventura Place between Laurel Canyon Blvd, and Radford Ave. and open on SUNDAYS from 8:00am – 1:00pm (rain or shine), the markets’ vendors offer a wide variety of products from fresh seafood to olive oils, honey, artisan breads, fruits, vegetables, and a bevy of prepared foods.  This market boasts of a food court serving breakfast burritos, pupusas, tamales, dim sum, ramen, and much more.  Kid friendly activities include pony rides, petting zoo, bouncy slide, and even a train ride.  A portion of the proceeds are donated to local charities such as Cancer Control Society, weSpark, Tierra Del Sol, the San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission just to name a few.  For more information, visit their website.

NoHo Farmers Market, located at 5331 Bakman Ave in North Hollywood, is open on SATURDAYS from 9:30am – 2:30pm.  Many of the vendors are Certified Farmers Market (CFM) growers, operating small family farms with a reputation of producing quality crops.  They have a food court offering sweets, Salvadorean food, tamales, kombucha, and much more.  Local live bands, Schoolcraft and Murray, an acoustic guitar comedy duo, and Sideproject, a local LA Indie rock duo, provide the entertainment for this farmers’ market.  Visit their website for more information.
